What to Do About Leaking Sinks

Water seems like a godsend at times. We use it to cook, to clean ourselves and to literally stay alive by drinking it. There are, however, few things that can do more damage to a home than water when it gets where it’s not supposed to go. This can cause damage such as peeling paint, wood rot, metal corrosion and damage to other materials. One big way it gets where it’s not supposed to go is through plumbing leaks, and a big culprit here can be one or more of your sinks.

Types of Sink Leaks

Your sink can leak from various places. The basic components of any sink will include the basin itself, the faucet handle or handles on top and the drain pipe underneath that leads the wastewater away. Beneath the sink, you will also have the hot and cold water pipes leading up to the faucet fixture.

As mentioned above, leaks are no laughing matter and should be addressed quickly. Over time, even fairly small leaks can accumulate some pretty impressive damage. Whatever time you invest in a do-it-yourself repair now or money you pay a plumber now will be better than still having to pay that later but then also having to repair the water damage.

Leaking Faucet

This is a common situation. After you run your sink faucet for a while, do you see water starting to collect around the base of the faucet mount? This type of leak might also only drip down from the faucet under the sink, or it could have leaks in both areas.

There are, of course, a ton of DIY videos on YouTube showing people how to do practically anything, and replacing a faucet is certainly no exception to this. Those who are fairly handy might be able to do a competent job on their own attempting such a procedure. For those who aren’t sure, your best bet will be to call a professional in to do the job. Such work is generally easy for a professional plumber, so the upside is that it typically doesn’t take them too long, which makes it a fairly inexpensive job.

Leaks in the Pipes

Most pipes are solid enough that leaks in a pipe itself are fairly rare. Where leaks typically occur is in the connections between the pipes. If you see water coming from one of these connections, you can try taking a wrench and tightening the connection. If this doesn’t do it, you may need to call a plumber. It is, of course, tempting to just wrap some duct tape around where the leak is and convince yourself that you’ve “fixed” the problem. Keep in mind that water is relentless, and it will always aggressively seek out the path of least resistance, and that’s always going to be where your crude patchwork job is.

Leaking Basin

If the sink itself is leaking, this would indicate damage to the sink. Such damage would typically be easy to spot and would really call for a new sink. You should probably forget about any notions of trying to patch or fix the sink somehow. Most sinks, especially if they are made of a natural stone or porcelain material, are fairly thick. If it has cracked or degraded to the point of water leaking directly through the sink itself, replacement is probably the only thing to do. Putting a new sink in is a major undertaking and should only be done by a professional.

River City Plumbing Will Fix Your Leaky Sink

At River City Plumbing, we can quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and fix or replace only what’s wrong, so you don’t pay for any work you don’t need. Our customers in the Germantown, Tennessee area know we are thorough professionals who get the job done right the first time.

Even if you are able to fix the current leak yourself, there is something you should consider. If your sink is leaking in one area, this means it may be showing signs of its age and could soon start leaking elsewhere. It may be time to change the whole sink, faucet and drain pipe leading from it. Especially if the leak is from a pipe and the piping is all of the same age, this will mean others could start springing leaks soon too.

Give us a call, and one of our master plumbers will take a look at the sink, its drain and all the nearby piping and give you our best recommendation on what should be done. These types of repairs are frequently easy and inexpensive when handled by pros such as ourselves. Whether it’s an easy repair or the installation of a new faucet, sink or pipes, we’ll get the job done right and within your budget.
